Jack White has been making all kinds of old-school rock star connects lately. Earlier this year, he appeared with Jimmy Page and the Edge in the guitar hero documentary It Might Get Loud. And now he's recording with legendary Rolling Stones axe-wrecker/partier/Johnny Depp inspirer Keith Richards.

Richards tells Rolling Stone that he and White have recently done some work together: "I enjoy working with Jack. We've done a couple of tracks." When Rolling Stone asked if White might produce the next Stones album, Keef said, "I couldn't fuel that rumor any more than to say Jack and I are in touch." That's not a denial!

White and the Stones are already acquainted with one another, as White made a guest appearance in Martin Scorsese's 2008 Stones concert doc Shine a Light.

Richards also told Rolling Stone that the Stones will soon reissue their 1972 classic Exile on Main St. with bonus tracks, and that he's working on his autobiography with writer James Fox: "I'm trying to remember things, which is very difficult."

o cohen que eu conhecia era um tipo clinicamente deprimido. cantava sobre o amor, as mulheres e o sexo com uma reverência sagrada. não sorria. não dançava. sofria. bolas, até a janis joplin teve pena dele e lhe ofereceu um broche piedoso! mais do que músico era um homem das letras... notava-se o desconforto que lhe causava cantar e tocar em frente a alguém.

o leonard cohen que vi hoje é outro homem. dança. sorri. parece feliz com a vida e, por isso, a música adquire uma acentuação celebratória que não estava presente antes. e a voz - caramba! - a voz está mais profunda do que nunca. a noção do ritmo das palavras, a gestão dos silêncios, a respiração... poucos há que se lhe comparem...

o alinhamento foi mais ou menos previsivel. começa-se com "dance me to the end of love" em passo leve e bonacheirão, passa-se por "bird on a wire", "who by fire", "tower of song", suzanne", "hallellujah", "so long, marianne" e, depois de uma quase-despedida com "i tried to leave you" recheada de lágrimas, sorrisos e solos, fecha-se a noite com uma oração.

momentos geniais, palavras solenes, músicos de excepção e um surpreendentemente bem humorado leonard cohen... praticamente 3 horas de história e estórias excepcionalmente bem contadas. o frio e impessoal pavilhão atlântico parecia um espaço bem menor, com as palavras a parecerem sussuradas aos ouvidos de cada uma das milhares de almas que por ali passaram.

é verdade que, uma vez ou outra, se roça o kitsh... principalmente quando aparecem uns solos manhosos que estão longe de acrescentar o que quer que seja, ou quando o público insiste em bater palmas ao ritmo de músicas que precisam de ser ouvidas e não participadas... mas chega-se ao fim do concerto e percebe-se que se esteve perante um dos maiores génios dos últimos 40 anos! e não, não são uns solos exagerados que retiram poder àquelas letras...

e o que dizer quando, no meio de uma actuação destas, nos deparamos com uma "famous blue raincoat" absolutamente perfeita - como de resto sempre foi - a arrasar tudo e todos? se não chorei neste momento então nunca hei-de chorar num concerto!

... lá se vai um dos melhores songwriters dos últimos anos. ainda assim, acho que daqui a um par de anos está de volta com três álbuns duplos e 30 músicas exclusivas para o myspace! volta depressa pá!

me- 34-a non smoker and happy, for the first time in my life.. i am excited to finish this wonderful time i have had with the cardinals and whatever new adventures may come after march. atlanta will be my last venture with the band and i am grateful for the time we have had and maybe someday we will have more stories to tell together. i am however ready for quieter times as i think it is very evident i am struggling with some balance and hearing issues.
also, no drama or anything but i am okay to step back from all of this right now and i think i did enough manic blogging when i felt alone and isolated during the last few years of travel. these last few years were the hardest i can remember and the most rewarding but i have loved ones to care for now and i am lucky i have been given a chance to turn around and see just what i am capable of as a friend and as someone who is not gone forever every year- it rendered me incapable of things i needed to be to myself and others- and my schedule sometimes never ended when the shows did- and some of that was my doing. and i lost someone i loved, and i lost myself.

that changed. i got to know just who i am in this little spell of time here recently. and change is the nature of the world and i naturally embrace that.

i won't be blogging here anymore either- but not for effect- it just is not being kind to myself- i need a life that is mine- i need to grow up and grow in to who i have subtly been working back towards since i stopped all that nonsense and i know also no matter what i choose to do in the music world, because i chose to do things my way and never lie i will always be viewed as an "asshole" ( i hear and have seen things in the past) and i am not, and i know the truth and i know who i am.

also it is kind of ridiculous to blog as i am a musician and anything i say here just gets reprinted at some point out of context. i say NOT FAIR but it doesn't matter what i say anymore or what is fair anymore really does it- the 21st century media has it's own rules about what is true and what is not. it is not a life- not one i want to live anyway and i don't really care to participate in narcissistic over-indulgent behavior anymore- that was never my intention- i just wanted to fight for my right to make music and to be given the benefit of the doubt. now, because i have stood up for myself and fought for myself i am labeled all kinds of awful things. well, i will walk away now and it will not matter what anyone say's. there are other things i can do in this life, other ways to be creative and to try and help others and be expressive without being demonized for attempting to gain the same things any other human being desires- love- friendship- understanding- and being able to express yourself without constant fear of being mistreated for speaking up

i have friends to make, brand new books coming (two of em' not counting that one already printed and on it's way out there and i LOVE writing....yay!) and a whole lot of living and learning to do.

i am excited to step away. i lost more than anyone will ever know (hearing, someone i loved, my sense of dignity, a never ending losing battle with stage fright and now my hearing and balance due to an inner ear issue- people accusing me of not being sober when i am suffering tremendous pain and nausea from my inner ear symptoms- people accusing me of theft (THEFT- ....awful) and this is not much of a life, not glamorous like those ridiculous video's a long time ago television played and no it is not monetarily as rewarding as people would like you to believe and yes, it is soul destroying. especially when you spend your life trying to write about the really difficult stuff and you stand there losing your way and people yell at you like you were in a circus. when it was your dream to matter and you realize one day, it never mattered- i mean, i am a punch-line and a footnote in what is worse to yell at someone besides "free-bird". i mean, i lost. and it's okay because i seriously snuck some pretty neat idea's in there in the work when i was making those mistakes or they were being made by others. this business is no science.

andf you know, whatever this is- it's not my dream. and it is a punishing thing to endure when you are getting worse and worse- it's not my dream, my dream was to try and tap into that energy i saw watching Minutemen vcr tapes when i was just a little shit in NC of mike watt's crazy shaking leg and his electric fingers- or how sonic youth droned into beautiful clouds those guitars shaking, kim and steve rattling the pulsing lines into feverish thudding imaginary subway cars racing through my heart- and how it felt to just let go and static up a riff and find the sweet spot- but getting yelled at for just being a songwriter- to be called so many horrid things because i chose to love music so much, and also to look for peace and balance in my life- that is not kindness and just not my thing. at least not now.

and i loved somebody. and i let others decided if that was okay and that was wrong and i was wrong and no one should deny themselves or others love or understanding because people don't get it. that was an awful mistake. i always make big mistakes. it's like i let myself learn that because that was a role, a niche' i filled that make sense to a loud voice of strangers who would never really play a real part in my life.

never become that if you choose this path- if you go this route with your art. never listen to those loud dissatisfied bystanders who only want to see you fail because that will be entertaining for that moment. hold fast to your dreams, hold faster to your heart and never step out of the light of that love that made you whole. i did. and i know better now. and better late than never i suppose.

but i am okay now. i see a peaceful way to better days now. i am healing. and most importantly i feel loved and i have learned to treat myself with that same curiosity and lover that i have been lucky enough to feel and to learn to let guide my life. love is the great teacher and i am happy to be learning now. happy to be listening to that over this never ending painful ringing. this is the great lesson of my life. for once i want to be dignified in my study and in one place long enough to hear and understand without my pride or my lack of faith in myself leading me further away from things i need to know once and for all.

this is the real work now. the rest is something else entirely.

quitting smoking was a good step and i am happy i also am just now beginning to understand how important it is i take better care of myself in every way right now. hell i am even beginning to sleep a little and i can feel the things good and bad that i did not have time to feel when i was running towards a new oblivion of work, hoping somehow someday what i did would be accepted and maybe that would make me feel loved. how foolish.

that is not love. love is being accepted for who you are. love is taking care of yourself and caring for others and dreaming out loud when it matters. not chasing rainbows. not hoping for some eventual collective sigh of approval which will never come. how did i ever think in those terms? i always knew better. thank goodness i know now how to be honest with myself.

anyway, enjoy these shows ( i will enjoy them immensely and i will miss them just as much) and know that i am not abandoning anyone, not the cardinals and not the fans, this is just something i need to do now, and that i loved playing music in the cardinals and hell, even before i was in a place to try and learn to be well, music was my life source- and cardinals was such a heavy crush and a real dream...i honor it too much to have any regrets right now, i am just proud.

maybe we will play again sometime and maybe i will work my way back into some kind of music situation but this is the time for me to step back now, to reel it in and i wish everyone peace and happiness and if music is your dream, or if just dreaming is your dream, may you find your way through the rough patch with ease and i hope you let go and it takes you all the way there-

no final dos anos 60, década do flower power, um grupo de jovens ingleses fartou-se da "peace and love" reinante, considerando a postura hippie hipócrita e desfasada da realidade que eles conheciam - a dureza das pequenas e médias cidades industriais - e desconstruiu o blues, adicionando-lhe peso, paranóia e uma paixão pelos filmes de terror, dando origem - se se considerar possível uma só banda lançar todas as sementes para o desenvolvimento de um novo "estilo" -, neste processo, ao heavy metal.

e não conheço muitas bandas actuais que consigam tocar com este peso e intensidade... tal como os black sabbath, o heavy metal devia ter acabado em 1978. o que se seguiu - nos sabbath foi o ronnie james dio; no heavy metal a história é conhecida - não passou de um conjunto de sucessivas distorções, adulterações e ridicularizações - salvo honrosas excepções - de uma fórmula até então plenamente válida e agora desgastada.

When you're on stage, playing the songs from Berlin, do you ever feel going to a certain state of mind, connected to the mood of the album [this is, allegedly, one of the most depressive album in the History of rock] and to the moment you recorded it?

[1st answer:]

I feel like I'm before a musical piece, songs that are very well written, that I have to play in the best way possible.

[Silence. I insist:]

But does this state of mind change every night? How is your emotional relationship with this songs?
I try to stay true to the words and tunes of Berlin. I approach each one of this songs the same way I approach every song of mine. I try to stay true to them.

[Despite the serious voice, almost mechanic, that was coming out of my phone, I still believed I could have an actual interview/conversation]

But do you feel them as something very farway?
You're asking me the same question ten times! Ok? I think that's enough. You're not going to get another answer that means anything to you. It's a work I love and that I can relate with the most purity in my heart I can. Ok?

Ok... Nowadays do you see yourself more like a rock'n'roll man or writing, literature man?
They don't kill each other. I've always been someone connected to rock'n'roll and I've always been a writer. I write the stuff for the guy that sings and plays the songs. It's all the same person. They're the same guy. What else can I say to you?

[Ok: don't insist again, don't stretch the silence for too long, go to the next question. Without having a clue that it would set the tone for the entire interview...]

You're playing in Lisbon on the same night as Leonard Cohen. In March you gave the speech for when Cohen entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame... Do you feel close to him as a songwriter, despite coming from such different backgrounds?
The same night?! Yes, I gave that speech, obviously I feel close to him and to his work. I'm a fan. If we're the same type of songwriters, I'm not in a place to say it. But why the hell did they book us for the same night?! That's completely insane, don't you think? I'd love to see Leonard's concert. I wanted to see him perform. Why did they book us for the same day?

[I couldn't resist:]

I'm not in a place to say it. But you can always meet him after the concert...
I want to see him perform! I don't get it. On the same night?!

[The worst was yet to come. To be honest the question was far from great; yes, it's a bit shallow, but it 's one of those 'bad' questions that can have a good answer, revealing, surprising. And it had, in a way...]

At the age of 66, what is for you just a perfect day?
Oh, pleeeaaaase... Don't ask that. Questions like that are very boring for me. I'm sure you can do better... But if you want to waste your time, go ahead...

[Ok, focus, don't let the silence stretch too much, mutter something that makes sense. Anyway, move on. I still have a couple of minutes left. And after all there are always questions that work more or less with musicians. But will they work with Lou Reed?]

Are you writing any new stuff, new material? Do you write during the tours?
Yes. But I don't write when I'm playing. I have a new song, very good, that I'm giving away in my site: Power of the Heart. It's free.

Are you thinking about a new album?
I'm thinking about many things at the same time. But I don't have anything new to record.

Don't you get tired of the routine of being a musician?
I'm never going to grow tired of music. And I love playing with the band. I like to travel around different places. It's wonderful to see the rest of the world.

What have you been listening during this tour?
This tour's musical producer, Hall Wilner, and I have a radio program, Lou Reed's New York Shuffle. It's a paying satellite radio. And because of that I listen to the most eclectic type of music. Dance music, electronic music, bag-pipes, music from Argelia, rap... Any genre I can remember, I'll listen to it... R'n'B, soul, punk, new rock bands...

And do you have any reference from Portuguese music?
Give me a moment. [Yells: 'Willner! Will you give me some names of Portuguese musicians?' Silence. I laugh, this is starting to look like a comedy sketch. But the voice returns, deadpan]. Fado. se há uma semana atrás me perguntassem qual tinha sido o concerto da minha vida, teria respondido, sem hesitar, "neil young, vilar de mouros, 2001". hoje já não tenho essa certeza... mas responderia algo do tipo: "qualquer um dos que vi do neil young!".

a verdade é que não há palavras para descrever o concerto do passado sábado. de uma só assentada o velho neil terá mudado vidas: muitos daqueles que presenciaram tamanho concerto estarão agora a pensar formar uma banda e outros tantos, aqueles que já são músicos, terão chegado a casa e partido as respectivas guitarras. afinal, são (somos!) meros mortais.

como não consigo articular muitas palavras por forma a criar um todo coerente, limito-me a mais algumas ideias soltas:

- neil young é deus!
- o som daquela guitarra! foda-se! não há filho da puta neste mundo que faça uma guitarra soar tão bem! as guitarras foram feitas para soar assim! fuzz + distorção + feedback = céu!
- o homem transformou a "no hidden path" numa jam de meia-hora alimentada a fuzz e caralhos me fodam se cada uma daquelas notas não foi, naquele momento, a coisa mais importante do universo e arredores!
- old man, unknown legend, lonesome me, cortez the killer, powderfinger, love and only love, rockin' in the free world, words!! (caralho, words!), mother earth, spirit road, the needle and the damage done, heart of gold, get back to the country, no hidden path...
- aquele final! a day in life + fuzz + feedback + cordas partidas + feedback + fuzz + feedback!
- o estilo! a entrega! o homem está em cima do palco, tem idade para ser meu avô, mas cada um daqueles solos é feito como se toda a existência dele dependesse...
- foda-se! neil young é deus!

ps: o ben harper tem tomates! depois deste concerto, fosse eu a ter a responsabilidade de subir ao palco a seguir e teria pegado na trouxa, rabinho entre as pernas e "até qualquer dia!"....

graças a deus existe o botão "skip"! tal como os álbuns de soul clássicos alternavam baladas com faixas enérgicas e dançáveis, seguindo uma fórmula rigida e quase-matemática, o último álbum dos dirtbombs alterna garage rock de inspiração soul-fuzz em pura ebulição caótica com faixas tão medíocres que não há pedal de fuzz ou coolness a la mick collins que as salve.

e se calhar é assim mesmo que tudo faz sentido! ninguém ouve os the dirtbombs à espera de perfeição ou da próxima música que salve o mundo (ou o rock... o que vai dar ao mesmo). aqui as coisas só fazem sentido quando são sujas, cruas, imperfeitas, às vezes feias, às vezes excitantes... quando num mesmo espaço coexistem pedaços de génio garage como ever lovin' man (foda-se mick! és deus!) e lixo desinspiradissimo como la fin du monde (foda-se mick! cantar em francês?)! é como se o mick collins e a sua trupe nos quisessem obrigar a atravessar autênticos desertos de inspiração para depois, com redobrado e inesperado impacto, nos dizerem "rock'n'roll é isto, caralho!"

não são poucas as vezes em que os mitos influenciam a forma como ouvimos determinada música. a história por detrás desta ou do autor dá-nos, tantas vezes, uma perspectiva que enquadra e humaniza a obra. e este é um dos casos: justin vernon, o artista em questão, deixa a banda que não ia a lado nenhum, termina uma relação de longa data com a namorada e refugia-se numa cabana no meio do nada, em pleno inverno, isolando-se por quatro meses do resto do mundo. para sobreviver caça. para manter a sanidade mental compõe e grava.

o resultado é uma obra-prima, uma colecção de canções de um homem que perde tudo menos as suas memórias, medos e angústias.

folk introspectivo, catártico e claustrofóbico, onde todos as peças se fundem num perfeito retrato de um mito. a voz frágil aproxima-se, por vezes, do registo da de neil young ou elliot smith, mas é aqui reforçada pela sobreposição de várias pistas, acentuando uma tonalidade quase-celestial, qual coro de amigos-imaginários que se juntam à alma torturada em busca de rumo; o uso de pequenos artíficios electrónicos nunca coloca em causa o sentimento de privação que ecoa da música e as letras, na sua aparente falta de lucidez, são o espelho que reflecte a perda de sanidade e equilibro emocional de alguém à beira de um precipício...

ouça-se o álbum numa escura noite de inverno e certamente tudo aqui fará sentido.

foi tudo insuportavelmente bom até ao encore e aquela versão da they can't win a fechar o set principal foi pura cobardia! devia ser proibido provocar tamanha excitação num homem... abrir o encore com a shirt jac dos blues explosion também não se faz, mas vá lá que depois acalmaram um bocadinho! é que se continuassem ao mesmo ritmo tinha que vos proclamar, alto e bom som, a melhor banda de rock'n'roll do mundo e arredores e de todos os tempos e eras!

o som é uma merda. parece que foi gravado num daqueles gravadorzitos de mão utilizados em entrevistas, daí para um walkman onde a fita se enrolou e finalmente para o pc, onde um programa merdoso comprimiu as faixas e lhes retirou qualquer definição. às vezes sentimos o ouvido a latejar e a cabeça ameaça uma cefaleia. não se percebe patavina das letras. parecem cantadas em inglês mas não tenho a certeza e quem tiver que o diga. a(s) guitarra(s) está/estão demasiado distorcida(s), ao ponto de fazer(em) feedback e chiar(em) por tudo e por nada. a melodia (quase) não existe: (quase) só ruido! as teclas estão cá bem em cima na mistura. mistura esta que deve ter sido feita por alguém que percebia tanto disto quanto eu percebo de física quântica. também anda por ali um baixo e o baterista é hiperactivo e gosta de bater em tudo o que tem à frente.

resultado: é do caralho! fuzz-punk-garage-motherfuckers!! caralho! isto é excitante (fisica e sexualmente). é sujo, porco, cru e rude! quem ouve isto e, no mínimo, não bate o pé, das duas uma: ou é perneta ou está morto! riffs de guitarra garage vintage, um orgão serpenteante, uma batida irresistivel e um vocalista alucinado. é preciso mais alguma coisa?

filho de estrelas e com nome de estrela, a estreia deste "novo" elvis, aos 31 anos, mais não é do que a concretização de um destino certamente traçado à nascença.

e se a morte da mãe (passageira de um dos aviões utilizados como armas a 11 de setembro de 2001) ainda assombra e é fonte de inspiração para a escrita destas canções, a verdade é que esta é uma colecção de temas, na sua maioria, airosos e optimistas. o doce embalo de while you were sleeping é disso exemplo maior, enquanto músicas mais negras como the night and the liquor oferecem um contraponto que equilibra o álbum, sem nunca o afundar na dura solidão tão caracteristica de muitos cantautores que utilizam o country e o folk alternativos como medicina para as dores da alma e do coração... e para isso muito contribui a escolha de arranjos e instrumentos, tradução clara do ecletismo do autor, que tanto se revê nos "compadres" ryan adams e rufus wainwright, como lhes acrescenta um paixão pela música indiana e pelo bossa-nova.

um dos melhores álbuns de 2007, definitivamente.

há uns 7/8 anos, jimmy page juntou-se aos black crowes numa tournée que pretendia revisitar e prestar homenagem a algumas das principais músicas dos led zeppelin, injectando-lhes uma nova vida que só alguém com sangue na guelra, como a rapaziada da banda norte-americana, seria capaz.

e depois, em músicas como a ten years gone, o formato da banda, com três guitarras e teclas, permitia a reprodução efectiva de todas as linhas criadas por jimmy page na gravação original. aqui, por exemplo, as três guitarras permitem a reprodução dos arranjos quase orquestrais que ornamentam uma música que, pela limitação do formato guitarra-baixo-bateria, nunca tinha sido tocada ao vivo pelos led zeppelin.

peça central do álbum the good son, "ship song" corresponde ao momento em que o aprendiz ultrapassa o mestre, neste caso nick cave e scott walker, respectivamente. declaração de amor emocional, majestosa e intemporal (intemporalidade esta apoiada em linhas líricas que soam milenares) é, provavelmente, o ponto alto da carreira do nick cave da calma negritude. e sim, também foi este senhor que escreveu a "into my arms" ou a "are you the one i've been waiting for?"...

muito já se disse sobre os rapazes. toda a gente os conhece, toda a gente conhece as músicas... aliás, conhecemo-las tão bem que algumas até já devem estar impressas no nosso código genético e vão ser transmitidas aos nossos filhos sem que eles ouçam uma nota que seja e, quando finalmente as ouvirem, vão dizer, sem grande entusiasmo, "olha o paul, o john, o ringo e o george!"

mas a verdade, ou parte da verdade, é que os rapazes são realmente interessantes. e há aqui claramente um ad e um dd (antes-de-dylan e um depois-de-dylan). antes de conhecerem o bob dylan, eram pouco mais do que um grupo de rapazes a fazer músicas simples sobre os difíceis amores da adolescência. depois de contactarem e partilharem umas substâncias ilícitas com o génio-mor, viraram-se para a escrita "séria", instrospectiva e inspirada e para a exploração total das potencialidades de um estúdio na criação de obras de arte! pelo menos é assim que eu vejo a evolução deles, apesar de estar longe de a dominar.

esta música é daquelas que fazem já certamente parte de um inconsciente colectivo. ponham uma criança de 2 anos a ouvir o coda (os da da's) e vejam como, sem medo ou pudor, também ela desata a cantar "da da da dadada da dadada da hey jude"... que maior prova de genialidade podem exigir?

e depois há a letra. aqui simples, mas com momentos extraordinários, como aquele que já é, para mim, um favorito. a vida em 5 linhas apenas:

ontem ouvi esta música num centro comercial! depois de me questionar, sem encontrar resposta, acerca de possíveis motivos para esta música, tão afastada daquela que por norma nos assombra nestes espaços, estar a ser usada como banda-sonora para o consumismo de centenas de pessoas, deleitei-me uma vez mais com a sua beleza...

à última grande música de dylan nos anos 60 corresponde a incorporação de uma nova persona da qual escorre uma nova voz: depois do cantor de protesto e da vertiginosa acidez eléctrica, a ressurreição como homem de raízes encontra aqui a sua expressão máxima... o crooner country em toda a sua plenitude.

a letra (mais simplista que o habitual) está algures entre o amor romântico e o amor sexual, temas comuns na obra do poeta.

e aquele "bridge" é de uma beleza quase-transcendente...

parece que é moda. e já chateia. e pior, não esperava que nenhuma destas bandas o fizesse. pelo menos, à partida, vão fazê-lo num momento único, sem prolongarem a reunião em digressões que enchem bolsos e enfraquecem mitos.

os led zeppelin vão voltar a tocar juntos (ao que parece com o filho do baterista original) num concerto de homenagem a ahmet ertegun (fundador da atlantic records) a 26 de novembro deste ano. em 12 horas o site a partir do qual se pode ganhar acesso à compra dos bilhetes (há um sorteio prévio!) foi acedido mais de 80 milhões de vezes. a loucura está instalada.

já os sex pistols vão também actuar por uma única ocasião, na academia de brixton, londres, a 8 de novembro.

aproveitei uma promoçãozita da fnac (talão de 5 euros de desconto) para baixar um bocadinho o preço do texas troubador e trouxe-o para casa... e foda-se que génio! não consigo parar de tocar esta merda!!

muita razão tem o steve earle quando diz, e passo a citar, "townes van zandt is the best songwriter in the whole world and i'll stand on bob dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that"... não tem a razão toda porque o van zandt nao é melhor que o dylan: é tão bom quanto ele!

até a foto da capa me toca: em tons sépia, com o townes e a sua guitarra num qualquer recanto texano! só me apetece pôr a minha guitarra às costas e palmilhar mil estradas poeirentas à procura de quem me parta o coração... para fazer das cicatrizes canções!

90 euros gastos + 4 concertos vistos + 3 concertos bons = saldo positivo!

nenhum dos concertos foi realmente mágico ou arrebatador mas isso deveu-se, essencialmente, a factores não directamente relacionados com as bandas, dos quais destaco: a qualidade de som que, não sendo má, não passou do razoável (e longe, muito longe da perfeição sonora dos stones em coimbra ou, sequer, da atitude "que-se-foda-a-qualidade-de-som-vou-por-isto-no-máximo-e-vão-sair-daqui-todos-surdinhos" do neil young há 6 aninhos em vilar de mouros e que tão bem assentaria por aqui); o público, sedento de hits e ainda embriagado pelo nacionalismo bacoco (quantas vezes é preciso gritar "portugal, portugal" durante um concerto?) que nos afectou ali pela altura do nosso europeu de futebol e os condicionalismos próprios de uma actuação de festival, como sejam o tempo limitado e os alinhamentos que procuram sempre ter em conta o "festivaleiro fã" e o "festivaleiro não fã" (que só conhece uma músiquita ou outra que passou na rádio)... e sim, aqui a culpa acaba por ser das bandas, que preferem agarrar todo o público fazendo um concerto baseado em temas mais conhecidos... e todas as bandas que vi o fizeram...

na primeira noite tocavam os linkin park e os pearl jam. dos linkin park não vale a pena falar... já os pearl jam, 8 meses depois de duas datas memoráveis no atlântico, verdadeiras experiências de catarse emocional, limitaram-se a dar um bom concerto. o início foi arrebatador: interstellar overdrive/corduroy, do the evolution, worldwide suicide e animal... cheguei a temer pela minha integridade física nesta fase, pois estava numa zona algo "instável", com muitos empurrões, saltos, pontapés e cotoveladas (mesmo que sem intenção doem, pá!) pelo meio... se juntassem aqui a brain of j de certeza que alguém morria! felizmente (ou não) acalmaram, trouxeram alguns hits e singalongs, mantiveram os milhares de espectadores satisfeitos, divertiram-se e divertiram... na memória fica um excelente solo do senhor mccready na why go (daqueles à guitar hero, guitarra atrás da cabeça e cá vai disto!!), grandes versões da crazy mary, da rearviewmirror, da life wasted e da tal why go e não muito mais... pelo menos, quando olho para trás e me lembro da última vinda dos rapazes cá fica a sensação de que foi bom, mas podia ter sido melhor... e podia também ter sido "mais" não tivesse a organização imposto um horário rígido às bandas! 2 horas é pouco, principalmente quando estamos habituados a maratonas!

o segundo dia começou (para mim) com os white stripes. são uma banda que aprecio bastante, mas com a qual ainda não consegui uma relação emocional. esperava um bom concerto e não defraudaram expectativas. rock saturado de blues e garage, excelentes canções, entrega, alma e suor. pecaram também pela setlist, uma vez mais demasiado colada a músicas mais conhecidas (apesar de as músicas mais conhecidas dos white stripes estarem longe de ser tão conhecidas quanto as dos pearl jam). as pontuais músicas novas (umas 2/3 ao longo do concerto) deram-me a conhecer uma belissima effect and cause, a fazer lembrar os flirts dos stones com a country. e no final, a apoteose com o hino seven nation army, entoado antecipadamente pelo público sempre que havia uma pausa entre músicas. pelo meio trouxeram a crua electricidade de músicas como hotel yorba, fell in love with a girl, death leaves and the dirty ground e alimentaram as ancas dos presentes, fãs ou não. só um reparo: sr jack white... o senhor até é um guitarrista talentoso, deixe lá esse pedal de oitavas de lado num ou noutro solo, pode ser?

o regresso dos smashing pumpkins era o outro concerto que queria ver. tendo em conta todas as condicionantes, não esperava grande concerto: esperava um concerto de uma banda balofa, sem o mínimo de entrega e/ou vontade. enganei-me... não foi mágico (apesar do belo início, com a chuva a cair ao mesmo tempo que o riff da today abria o concerto) mas foi bom, apesar do som fraquinho, distante e sem corpo nenhum. foi mais um concerto festivaleiro, com um alinhamento dedicado, com duas ou três excepções, a músicas mais conhecidas (disarm, bullet with buterfly wings, tonight, tonight, 1979, zero, today, rocket...), aqui entoadas a plenos pulmões por milhares de pessoas. e o billy corgan andava feliz... sorria, ria, brincava... e transportava muita gente a uma adolescência entretanto perdida mas que ele retrata como ninguém nas suas canções, plenas de angústias e dúvidas. talvez já não o sejam, mas foram uma das melhores bandas de rock alternativo que por aí andou e hoje, mesmo não sendo pertinentes ou necessários, vão brincando com as memórias de quem os vê...

agosto de 98... esta é provavelmente a música que mais associo a uma data ou momento específico. quando a ouço não consigo deixar de recordar a semana passada em agosto de 98 na figueira da foz, com amigos e a namorada da altura. de entre as muitas coisas que se faziam ou deixavam de fazer, ouvia-se música... e duas bandas em particular: os pearl jam e os led zeppelin. tinha comprado o physical graffiti no dia antes de irmos e ouvi-o pela primeira vez lá na figueira... a partir daí criou-se um ritual: todos os dias, quando nos deitávamos, era esta a música que ficava a tocar...

há, acredito, dois tipos de artistas: os inovadores e os "recicladores". os primeiros criam a partir do nada (ou levam-nos a pensar isso...), revolucionam géneros, criam modas, reiventam estilos... os segundos regurgitam fórmulas, renovam clichés, fazem do velho novo...

ora, é óbvio que tudo isto é uma treta... raramente um artista é puramente inovador/revolucionário ou reciclador/regurgitador. e depois há ainda aquelas que, para mim, são as divisórias mais puras da arte: há a boa... e há a má.

mas, com tudo isto, queria somente dizer que, entre muitos, andam por aí uns rapazes a regurgitar fórmulas e clichés, a fazer carreira sem uma única costela de originalidade, sem qualquer preocupação em inovar, inventar ou até reiventar um género... nada do que fazem não foi já feito, há anos e anos, pelos stones e pelos faces...

mas fazem-no com tal paixão, com tanto groove e know-how que não podemos deixar de nos questionar quantas horas terão passado estes rapazes a ouvir velhos vinis dos anos 60 e 70... e bolas, o que interessa que nada disto seja novo, se tudo isto é tão bom?
